O for Ordinary

She admires herself in the mirror. I am special, she says. Her hair extensions are long, her fake eye lashes black and wavy. Her boobs and lips are swollen with fat taken from her ass. I am so hot, she says and kisses the mirror. She puts on her new designer dress and adds a bit more lipstick. I am so sexy, she smiles. She takes up her iphone to put in her designer bag, and decides to check her Facebook. What? Only 17 Likes on my last selfie? Why? I look so good on that? She sinks down on the edge of the bed with a dropping feeling inside. She feels like crying. Maybe another picture in the other yellow dress will rise more Likes? Because I am so hot. I will be discovered. I shall be seen. I am extraordinary. Give me Likes. See me. Make me famous. She sighs. She feels so unhappy.

The hunger for extraordinary.

Each and every one of us are extraordinary and that makes us ordinary.

Do not let anyone else or external factors define you and your happiness. Find your own way to joy through feelings, not through material things. They can never bring you happiness. Be grateful for what you have and do not focus on what you do not have. If you focus on what you don't have, you will never be happy with what you do have. Dare to be ordinary in your extraordinarity - and enjoy every moment of it.

Make the ordinary come alive. Get to know yourself. Be happy with who you are. Here and now.

Quote by William Martin.

Ordinary or extraordinary, what makes you happy?

  3. Loved your post ! so important to be happy with what is there in our lives; rather than looking at what is not there and becoming miserable..

  4. You make a very interesting point when you say "Each and every one of us are extraordinary and that makes us ordinary". That is worth pondering over. Oh and true beauty comes from within. Beautiful people are those who show their inner glow. Very nice post.

  8. Wonderful post. I try to be grateful for who I am and what I have--I know I'm extraordinary in my own ways, even if I'm ordinary in others!

  9. Not sure where it's from, but I really like that poem in the image at the end. We spend way too much time telling our kids they're amazing, and so special and urge them to admire and to be like fantastic, extraordinary people. It may be awful to say but I'd kinda rather my kids be happy and content than constantly striving for ridiculous, unattainable things that may not be possible anyway (and worse, feel bad for not succeeding at them).

  10. Thank you for that. The poem at the end is fantastic, and a good thing to live by. My husband is really good at that. Me.. well it's more of a struggle. :)

  11. Thanks for this wonderful post and spot on poem.

My therapist used to tell me, "You don't want to be an ordinary person." For some time, I didn't understand him. When I finally did, I discovered that I wanted to be extraordinary while being exempt from all the ordinary, mundane suffering and living; I wanted a fantasy. It was probably the most difficult lesson I've ever learned and the most important.

  15. Each one of us are special in our own way and we need to celebrate that instead of waiting others to appreciate us! Great post Eli :)

  16. Wonderful post Eli! :) I especially love "Each and every one of us are extraordinary and that makes us ordinary" and similarly, "Dare to be ordinary in your extraordinarity." ;) I find I am both as I am an ordinary human being, but a strong inner drive to do something that will make a big and positive impact - huge preferably! ;) - that came from a biography and later reading biographies and autobiographies. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. <3

  17. Our ordinary makes us special, that's how we find our kind of extra ordinary.
A much needed thought in today's age of asking for instant everything.
